    • Real Stories from Toronto #5,324,694 – Pansy Vs Asshole

      Posted at 3:12 am by Gelene Celis, on January 4, 2014

      “Ugh yeah I worked for that guy before.  He’s talented and all but he’s a real asshole.”

      “Like, how was he an asshole?”

      “We worked such long hours because he wanted to test things out.”

      “Yeah, but like how was he being an asshole?”

      “He just kept wanting to revise things up until he’s satisfied with the outcome and he was demanding… and I had to work such long hours.  He was a total asshole.”

      ====================

      Personally I believe that as human beings we have an innate instinct to produce our own voice.  It’s sad when you’re pegged as a bad person just because you’re just doing what it takes to get things done right…but then again, that’s a socio-economic epidemic.

      There’s people who get angry when things aren’t done right and then there’s people who get angry at people out of fear of “losing face,” reputation, and things done/said but a part of themselves they don’t accept.
      Know the difference between an asshole and a pansy (the real asshole).
      Hint: “Assholes” work for their vision.  Pansies work attached to “prestige”, “status”, and reputation at the helm of things instead of using these as commodities for a higher purpose.

    • Heat Recovery

      Posted at 7:11 pm by Gelene Celis, on May 7, 2013

      … is a photographical concept by Oliver Pauk (Toronto, ON)

      heat_recovery_3
      heat_recovery_2
      heat_recovery_1

      “The most significant way in which humans waste energy is in the form of heat.  In North America, nearly half of the energy produced is released from our products, processes and buildings, directly into the atmosphere and the water system. Waste heat recovery is the process of harnessing this thermal energy and re-using it. I have chosen to photograph heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and to use the effect of thermal imagery in order to portray their huge potential for heat recovery.

      Estimates state that in the U.S., waste heat recovery has the potential to satisfy forty percent of total energy requirements. Operating at this level would save the American economy roughly 150 billion dollars per year and would, simultaneously, decrease greenhouse gas emissions by twenty percent; the equivalent of taking every passenger vehicle off of the road.”

    • Sara Shields

      Posted at 7:07 pm by Gelene Celis, on March 8, 2013

      … is a visual artist based in Toronto, ON living in Aurora, ON

      “Sara Shields was born in 1990 and currently practices art in the Toronto area.  Sara’s works have been purchased by clients in Canada and the UK.
      Sara graduated from the Fine Arts Studio program at Toronto’s Centennial College in 2010.  While there, she started to develop her unique style of drawing, using paper and pastels – a style that continues to evolve today.
      Sara’s obsession with exploring the transformation of the natural and real into the surreal and strange turns any simple expression or movement of the human form into something new, somewhere far from the “normal.”  Each drawing originates in a nude reference, but morphs into mystery, presenting wild, highly energized abstract forms which are in alien contrast to the human world.  Let their movement draw you in and sweep you away.”

    • Damhsa Music

      Posted at 7:22 pm by Gelene Celis, on February 23, 2013

      … is a techno DJ duo from Ireland, currently based in Toronto, ON.

      =================

      I met them when they were still “Cristian & Hynes.”  I don’t remember how I discovered them but they were pretty fresh from Ireland at the time, something like 2 months and they loved it here.  They started DJing in Ireland and found a base here in TO so they kept rolling.

      Check out their Soundcloud here

    • Speaker Fucking – Dub Connection Sound System

      Posted at 12:25 pm by Gelene Celis, on February 20, 2013

      1010069_10152043514408574_1383156802_n

      Dub Connection Sound System is based in Toronto, ON.  They recently hosted their launch party with unreal DIY wooden speakers.

      =================

      I can’t find their pages anymore but you can read more about them here

      They also collaborate with Dub Stuy Records (Brooklyn, NYC) on occasion.
      Check them out here

      PS.
      Speaker Fucking
      “Verb phrase;
      Standing right in front of the speakers, whether dancing or not.  While it may feel really fucking good for the speaker fucker, this usually diminishes the sound quality for everyone listening to the music and is generally frowned upon by those who do not speaker fuck.  Side-effects of speaker fucking generally include eventual deafness, desensitization to vibration, and feeling really fucking good while you’re doing it.

      “I was speaker fucking for the last ten tracks and my bones are still quakin’ from the bass shakin'”
      – Urban Dictionary

      It’s not my thing anymore these days but I used to speaker fuck my face off.
      If you’ve never done it… you’re missing out.

    • Fourth of July

      Posted at 12:21 pm by Gelene Celis, on February 14, 2013

      …is a film I took part in (tech rotoscoping, editing) for my final project in Sheridan – Oakville, ON

      Fourth of July – An Arctic Turn from Evan DeRushie on Vimeo.

      ==================

      There’s 2 kinds of rotoscoping:
      1. The kind where you trace objects frame by frame (like this one) because we can’t isolate it via green screen or some other reason(s)
      2. Animation rotoscoping, where you take live-action shots and turn it into animation.

      This was the former.  For the latter check out A Scanner Darkly if you wanna see what I mean.
