It is the culture surrounding ‘funk carioca’, a musical rhythm which mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980’s with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. ‘Baile funk’ is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world, but it comes from what is at times, one of the most violent and poorest places in the world: the slums of Rio de Janeiro (favelas). this music is the personalization of the raw element. Bombastic rhythms coming from the American Miami Bass and samples are fused with powerful rap vocals using Brazilian slang. This documentary tells stories of sex, love, poverty, and pride among Rio’s marginalized people. They have their own language, style, and heroes. I had a ton of posts on this guy as he is one of my favourite DJ’s/Producer/Musicians. I thought his talk, “PLAY: It’s a serious thing” is really important. A lot of people seem to think that art is all unicorn farts but like he mentioned, someone wanted to do a doc on a day of his life to which he responded, “It’s gonna be fucking boring then” ’cause all he does is sit in front of the computer at home and make music.
I’ve hung out with musicians -> true story. Shows are where they drop it.

I met them when they were still “Cristian & Hynes.” I don’t remember how I discovered them but they were pretty fresh from Ireland at the time, something like 2 months and they loved it here. They started DJing in Ireland and found a base here in TO so they kept rolling.
